Migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches are some of the most common types of headaches.
Tension Headaches
Tension headaches usually cause dull, aching pain that affects the entire head. Patients with tension headaches may also experience soreness in the neck and shoulders, as well as a sensation of pressure across the forehead. They often occur due to stress.
Migraines
The pain from a migraine headache is often concentrated on one side of the head; it’s usually severe and may pulsate or throb. Patients with migraines may also experience nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, and blurred vision.
Migraine headaches are usually brought on by certain triggers like stress, fever, hormone changes, certain foods, changes in the weather, medications, or other environmental factors. Migraine or tension headaches may also occur secondary to other conditions, such as sinus infections or vision problems.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are less common than tension headaches or migraines. They typically cause severe pain concentrated around one eye, along with redness, swelling, and tearing of the affected eye. The cause of cluster headaches is unknown. However, it’s more likely to affect men, patients with a family history of cluster headaches, smokers, and patients who drink alcohol.
Based on the type of headache and symptoms you experience, Dr. Beck at WesTex Urgent Care will either provide medication to relieve the pain or prescribe preventative medication for the patient to take at home. If we determine that the headache is related to an underlying condition, such as a sinus infection, you may receive treatment for the underlying condition as well.
You should seek treatment at WesTex Urgent Care if your headache is persistent, very painful, or recurrent. Schedule a virtual visit with our providers or visit our urgent care clinic today.
