Food and food additives, medicine, pet dander, pollen, chemicals in laundry or cleaning products, and venom from bee stings: these are some of the most common allergens, but there are a lot more out there! Allergies can affect your respiratory system, skin, and even your digestive system. They range from simple irritants to life-threatening illnesses.
The immune system is responsible for protecting the body from pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria. It provides this protection by producing antibodies to these harmful substances. The antibodies attack the pathogen whenever it enters the body. An allergy occurs when the immune system identifies an allergen as “harmful” to the body, even if it isn’t. It produces antibodies to the substance, which cause symptoms when the patient encounters the allergen.
Allergy symptoms can include an itchy nose or eyes, swollen eyes, a runny nose, itchy and flaky skin, or a rash. Food allergies may cause your lips, tongue, throat, or face to swell, which requires medical attention right away. At WesTex Urgent Care, we provide treatment for these symptoms, as well as those of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include a rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, loss of consciousness, and shortness of breath.
When you come to WesTex Urgent Care for allergy treatment, we’ll gather as much information as possible, including the symptoms you’re experiencing. Some patients might only need an antihistamine, while others may need more intensive treatment. Walk-ins are encouraged, so come and see us when you need us. If it's more convenient for you, please feel free to schedule a virtual visit with our providers. For your convenience, we have two locations in Midland and one office in Odessa, TX.
